Nirvana Lyrics - Discography

177 American Rock Band

"Nirvana," hailing from Aberdeen, Washington, crystallized as a pivotal American rock band in 1987, coalescing around the creative nucleus of lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. The band, with its early drummer rotation culminating in the addition of Dave Grohl in 1990, would chart a course that forever altered the landscape of alternative rock, becoming emblematic of Generation X.

Emerging in the late 1980s within the Seattle grunge scene, Nirvana unveiled their inaugural album, "Bleach," under the indie banner of Sub Pop in 1989. Their sonic identity, characterized by dynamic shifts between subdued verses and raucous choruses, found full expression when they signed with DGC Records in 1991. The release of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the lead single from their groundbreaking second album, "Nevermind" (1991), propelled them into unforeseen mainstream triumph, reshaping the musical zeitgeist and dismantling the hegemony of hair metal.

Nirvana's distinctive fusion of punk aesthetics, pop melodies, and discordant noise, coupled with themes of societal disaffection, catapulted them to global acclaim. The band's trajectory reached its zenith with the release of the lauded third studio album, "In Utero" (1993), which dominated both the US and UK charts. Despite their meteoric rise, Nirvana faced an untimely demise with Cobain's tragic suicide in April 1994.

Posthumously, surviving members Novoselic and Grohl, along with Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, shepherded subsequent releases. The live album "MTV Unplugged in New York" (1994) earned Nirvana a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance in 1996. Their indelible impact persists, with over 75 million records sold worldwide, accolades such as American Music and Grammy Awards, and an enduring legacy that secured their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. Rolling Stone further cemented their status, designating Nirvana among the 100 greatest artists of all time in 2004.
