Christopher Dwayne Tomlin (born May 4, 1972) was born in Grand Saline, Texas, United States. He is an American contemporary Christian music singer, songwriter and worship leader, With over 7 million records sold. He is professionally known as Chris Tomlin. He is associated with the Passion Conferences and is signed to EMI's sixstepsrecords. Some of his most acclaimed songs include "How Great Is Our God," "Our God," "Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies)," and "Holy Forever."
Tomlin's journey in music began at the age of 13 when he started singing at the Main Street Baptist Church in Grand Saline. By the time he was 14, he had written his first worship song. During his high school years, Tomlin honed his skills as a worship leader in his youth group. After graduating from Grand Saline High School in 1990, he attended Tyler Junior College (TJC), initially planning to pursue a career in medicine or physical therapy. He graduated from TJC in 1992 and then enrolled at Texas A&M University to study medicine. However, his passion for worship led him to become actively involved in a campus Christian group called Breakaway, where he eventually became the worship leader.
In 1994, Tomlin graduated from Texas A&M with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Post-graduation, he served as a worship leader at various camps in Texas, including Dawson McAllister Youth Conferences. His involvement with Breakaway also introduced him to Louie Giglio, founder of Choice Ministries, with whom he later co-founded the Passion Conferences in 1997.
Throughout his career, Tomlin has received numerous accolades, including 23 GMA Dove Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for his 2012 album "And If Our God Is for Us...". He also boasts two RIAA certified platinum albums. His 2013 album "Burning Lights" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking a historic achievement as the fourth CCM album to do so. Recognized by Time magazine, Tomlin is noted for his widespread influence, being described as possibly the "most often sung artist anywhere".
