7 English Singer & Songwriter

Amy Jade Winehouse (born 14 September 1983 – die 23 July 2011) was born in Southgate, London, England. She is an English singer and songwriter celebrated for her deep, expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic fusion of musical styles, including soul, rhythm and blues, reggae, and jazz. She is professionally known as Amy Winehouse. Her musical journey began in her youth with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and in 2002, she signed with Simon Fuller’s 19 Management. Winehouse soon recorded several songs, leading to a publishing deal with EMI and a fruitful collaboration with producer Salaam Remi.

In 2003, Winehouse released her debut album, Frank, which showcased her jazz influences and featured songs she co-wrote, with the exception of two covers. Frank was critically acclaimed in the UK and earned a Mercury Prize nomination. The single "Stronger Than Me" won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors.

Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, released in 2006, catapulted her to international stardom and became one of the best-selling albums in UK history. At the 2007 Brit Awards, it was nominated for British Album of the Year, and Winehouse was honored as British Female Solo Artist. Her hit single "Rehab" earned her another Ivor Novello Award. In 2008, Winehouse made history at the 50th Grammy Awards by winning five awards, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year (for "Rehab"), and Best Pop Vocal Album, tying the record for most wins by a female artist in one night and becoming the first British woman to achieve this feat.

Despite her immense talent, Winehouse's life was marred by struggles with substance abuse, mental illness, and addiction. She tragically passed away from alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011 at the age of 27, with her brother suggesting bulimia also played a role. Following her death, Back to Black briefly became the UK's best-selling album of the 21st century. VH1 later ranked her 26th on their list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music. Her tumultuous life and career were dramatized in the 2024 biopic Back to Black, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. Browse A to Z all Amy Winehouse Lyrics, songs, and albums below.
