Alicia Augello Cook (born January 25, 1981) was born in New York City, United States. She is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. She is professionally known as Alicia Keys. Keys began composing songs at the young age of 12 and was signed by Columbia Records at just 15 years old.

However, she later left the label due to disputes and signed with Arista Records before releasing her debut album, Songs in A Minor, in 2001 with J Records. The album was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, selling over 12 million copies globally. The lead single from the album, "Fallin'", topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the album garnered Keys five Grammy Awards in 2002.

Her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, released in 2003, was equally successful, selling eight million copies worldwide. The album produced several hit singles, including "You Don't Know My Name," "If I Ain't Got You," and "Diary," earning Keys an additional four Grammy Awards.

Keys is one of the best-selling music artists in the world, and her success is reflected in the Recording Industry Association of America's (RIAA) list of best-selling artists in the United States, having sold over 17.8 million albums and 21.9 million digital songs. With over 30 million albums sold worldwide, her singles "No One" and "Empire State of Mind" are also amongst the list of best-selling singles globally.

Keys set a Guinness World Record in 2008 for becoming the first artist to replace herself at number one with "No One" and "Like You'll Never See Me Again."
