Romance (2024)

Fontaines D.C.

English 93 August 23, 2024

"Romance" is the fourth studio album by Irish rock band Fontaines D.C. Released on 23 August 2024, it marks their first album with XL Recordings after leaving Partisan Records. The album was produced by James Ford, who is known for working with other notable artists. This collaboration pushed the band to experiment beyond their usual approach, stepping away from their long-standing rule of only recording songs they could perform live.

The album was first announced on 17 April 2024, alongside the release of its lead single, "Starburster." Other singles from the album include "Favourite," "Here's the Thing," and "In the Modern World." These tracks showcase the band's evolving sound and willingness to explore new creative avenues.

A particularly interesting track on the album is "Horseness Is the Whatness," which was written by guitarist Carlos O'Connell. The song's title is inspired by a line from James Joyce's Ulysses, reflecting the band's literary influences. "Here's the Thing" has its roots in a real-life argument between band members Grian Chatten and O'Connell, adding an element of raw emotion to the song. "In the Modern World," on the other hand, draws inspiration from Lana Del Rey's unique style of expressing disillusionment.

"Favourite," another key track, originally had twelve verses written by lead vocalist Chatten, but the band decided to trim it down to just four, streamlining its message. Finally, Conor Curley's lead vocals on "Sundowner" happened almost by accident, adding an unexpected layer to the album's sound.

"Romance" represents a new chapter for Fontaines D.C., showing their willingness to break free from past constraints and explore different musical landscapes. The album blends their signature intensity with fresh influences, making it a significant release in their discography.
