Love Sux (2022)

Avril Lavigne

English 805 February 25, 2022

"Love Sux" is the seventh studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne, released on February 25, 2022, through DTA and Elektra Records. It marked Lavigne’s return to her punk roots, three years after her 2019 album Head Above Water. Love Sux showcases a blend of emo pop and skate punk, heavily inspired by bands like Blink-182, Green Day, and NOFX. The album features collaborations with Machine Gun Kelly, Blackbear, and Mark Hoppus from Blink-182, adding to its nostalgic, rebellious feel.

The album includes 12 tracks, with standout songs like "Bite Me" and "Love It When You Hate Me", the latter featuring Blackbear. "Bite Me" was the lead single, delivering a fierce, fast-paced punk anthem that resonated with fans and critics alike. Love Sux keeps the energy high throughout, with Avril embracing her youthful angst and fiery spirit.

Critically, the album received mostly positive reviews. Many praised Avril for staying true to her signature sound while keeping it fresh with modern pop-punk elements. It was highlighted for its catchy hooks, upbeat tempo, and Lavigne’s consistent, unapologetic attitude. However, some critics noted the album’s lyrical content could feel repetitive at times, though this didn’t overshadow its energetic charm.

Love Sux debuted at number nine on the US Billboard 200, with 30,000 units sold in its first week, including 19,000 in pure album sales. The album also performed well internationally, reaching the top 10 in countries like Canada, the UK, Australia, and Japan.

A deluxe edition, featuring the track "I’m a Mess" in collaboration with Yungblud, was released later that year. Love Sux earned Lavigne several nominations, including Album of the Year at the Juno Awards 2023, and it won the Japan Gold Disc Award for Best 3 Albums.
